LICENSING
Do you know the difference between a state certified licensed professional contractor and someone that just states he is licensed and insured?
1. What is he licensed and insured for? People say they are insured but what does that policy cover? If they flood your house or the work they perform causes your house to catch on fire? Do you have peace of mind that the person that did the work, is adequately covered by their policy?
2. Did he just go down to the county and get an occupational license? If so, the county in which they obtained this license states they are able to do business in the area but does not mean they are licensed to do specific work such as a contractor.
3. A state-licensed contractor must hold the credentials and experience to do specific tasks such as plumbing, electrical etc.. and must pass a background check before he can be considered a state-certified contractor. This person must carry specific insurance in case of a problem or error that may cause harm to your beloved home along with a specific $5000.00 bond. A licensed contractor must have their name of the business on the truck or vehicle(s) along with their license number. If that person is injured on the job and in your home, the licensed contractor is required to carry Workers Compensation.... Someone with an occupational license is not. This could be an expense coming from your homeowners policy or you the homeowner could be sued for their injuries occurring your property due to not having the proper insurance. State of Florida is clear on what a contractor can and cannot do. It also states a homeowner hiring someone that is not licensed in that specific field such as plumbing, electrical , etc., to do the work the homeowner can be fined up to $5000.00.
4. If person you are hiring is not licensed for that specific task such as anything to do with plumbing, electrical ect. this is against Florida law. They are neither licensed or insured for the task that requires a specific license to do a task.
5. If the person does not specifically state what they can do, chances are you are not hiring a professional licensed contractor and you are rolling the dice.
DONT TAKE A CHANCE BY HIRING SOMEONE THAT IS NOT LICENSED OR INSURED FOR A SPECIFIC TASK .. CALL A PROFESSIONAL.
